Domine quo vadis?
The name of the church recalls an episode in the life of
the apostle Peter, who, when fleeing from Rome along this road,
met Christ disguised as a traveler. When Peter asked him
where he was going ("Domine, Quo Vadis"), Christ replied that
he was coming to be crucified a second time. On hearing these words
the apostle turned back to Rome to face martyrdom.
In the church there was a block of marble with the imprint of two feet,
an ancient ex-voto offered in gratitude after a successful journey:
a popular legend held that these were the miraculous
footprints of Christ himself.

The Forum of the Corporations, so called because
its great rectangular portico housed the offices of
sixty-four maritime companies. This was where you would come
if you needed to ship something to Rome, be it wheat from
Spain, sugar from India, or African beasts for the Colosseum games.
